Windows remains the operating-system of choice for countless users who would like the full desktop power without any type of compromise regarding the apps they have to run.

And while the competition from other platforms, including Linux itself, keeps growing, Windows continues to be number 1 desktop platform, and the large app ecosystem plays a vital role within this.

Google itself is pushing hard for Chrome OS, an operating system whose adoption is growing mostly in the education market where Chromebooks can be used by teachers and students for any wide selection of tasks. But simply like other platforms, Chrome OS has also suffered from the possible lack of app support, something which once more made Windows the go-to platform for thus many customers.

And now everything is designed to change.

Google has recently announced that it's bringing Windows apps, such as the Microsoft Office productivity suite, to Chrome OS, all using a partnership with Parallels. Quite simply, Chrome OS users should be able to run Windows apps on Chrome OS just like they are doing on Microsoft's operating system, therefore the drawback that I was referring to earlier would technically be eliminated.

Parallels software will be offered by OS level on Chrome OS, so the virtualization software would become available for everyone natively.

"The Chrome OS team is focusing on new methods to make sure every company can benefit from the velocity created by supporting a cloud workforce. For instance, our new partnership with Parallels brings legacy application support-which includes Microsoft Office desktop apps-to Chromebooks. More to come about this within the coming months," John Solomon, VP, Chrome OS, explains.

This announcement is anything but great news for Microsoft.

While initially the software giant might be one of the companies to profit in the Windows app support on Chrome OS, especially because Microsoft Office would thus make its debut on Google's platform, not the same thing is likely to happen in the long run.

Quite simply, with Chrome OS available these days to run Windows apps, some users no longer have a reason to choose Microsoft's operating-system, so in the long run, the marketplace share of Google's operating system is likely to continue growing.

And Google itself admits the adoption of Chrome OS is skyrocketing.

"The benefits and features of Chrome OS that we once thought were additive suddenly became mandatory and business-critical. Case in point, we have seen a 109% year over year growth in unit sales within the U.S. for Chromebooks, and ~155% year over year development in commercial Chromebooks in Q1 2020, fueled in part through the cost benefits and simplicity of deploying Chromebooks," Solomon notes.

Based on third-party data, Windows continues to be the main desktop operating-system having a share of the market that's over 85 %. Quite simply, nearly 9 in 10 PCs out there are still powered by Windows, with Windows 10 adoption also increasing, the latest OS version may be the one to benefit.

But on the other hand, the adoption of Windows alternatives keeps improving too. For instance, Linux has reached a brand new record this year, with increased and much more users giving a try towards the likes of Ubuntu, Linux Mint, and other distributions. With Chrome OS typically on affordable devices, there's a high probability Google would also become a more important player in this market.

For now, Microsoft continues to be go-to company for 9 in 10 users on the desktop, but it's pretty clear that it's all an engaged market with a continuously expanding portfolio of alternatives.

However, there can be situations in which you might want to change the taskbar position to the side or top of the screen. This is especially true if you want more vertical space in terms of computer screen property. For example, ultrawide screen users can pin taskbar to a side of the screen to increase vertical space.

Better late than never. After releasing the Windows 10 May 2020 update a few weeks ago to a select few of users, Microsoft is finally prepared to push it to more laptops.

When Microsoft first launched the May 2020 update at the end of last month, it just rolled it to some number of users. Everybody else needed to manually download the update but in the risk of experiencing one of the several lingering bugs that Microsoft had failed to resolve before releasing the update.

It's because of these bugs that many users, especially those with Dell, Lenovo as well as Microsoft's own Surface laptops, saw a note informing them that the May 2020 update wasn't quite ready for their system.

"Today we're enhancing the number of devices that'll be offered the May Update," Microsoft said on its update dashboard.

You may still find several known bugs with the update which are either under investigation or are now being actively patched. The type of may be the wherewithal to connect to multiple Bluetooth devices. Another problem leads to a stop error when you connect and disconnect a Thunderbolt 3 cable. And older Nvidia graphics cards with outdated drivers continue to be having problems with the new edition of Windows.

These are relatively minor problems that affect a little part of laptops, so Microsoft is ready to send the update to another batch of devices. In terms of which laptops will get the update, Microsoft didn't specify.

We do realize that Microsoft fixed an issue in which laptops using the Always On, Always Connected capability were randomly restarting. And yet, Microsoft still won't push the update to devices even after they install the patch with this bug. The safeguard hold, which affected Microsoft's own Surface Laptop 3 and Surface Pro 7, is expected to lift in the coming weeks.

"You may not see the update because we're slowly throttling up availability, or perhaps your device may have a compatibility hold to safeguard your update experience," the Windows Update team posted to Twitter.

Several laptop vendors have taken matters into their own hands. Lenovo did an intensive sweep of bugs affecting its laptops and outlined available fixes for most (although not all) of these. The May 2020 update caused trouble for a long list of Lenovo laptops, including some ThinkPad models.

Dell similarly tested dozens of its laptops, from Alienware to XPS models, to ensure that users possess a smooth experience after installing the May 2020 update.

Our advice is to fight the urge to manually install the May 2020 update, and wait until it gets pushed for your PC. In so doing, you'll have the very best possibility of avoiding any compatibility issues between your system and the update.

If you own a Lenovo laptop, don't download the latest version of Windows 10 until you've look at this article. Why? Because Lenovo posted a support page having a rather long list of known problems that are currently plaguing its laptops.

Lenovo tested each of its laptops searching for problems with the most recent Windows 10 May 2020 update. Unfortunately, the company discovered an alarming number of issues on a number of tablets and laptops. Many of these are minor problems that can be easily fixed, so don't panic at this time.

We'll go over each one of the problems and provide an answer if one is available. It's also wise to keep in mind that there are several additional bugs in the Windows 10 May 2020 update that Microsoft acknowledged after its official release.

Which range from Bluetooth connectivity issues to incompatibility with old Nvidia graphics cards, these bugs, if they apply to you, will prevent your laptop from automatically installing the latest form of Windows. If you're within this group, we highly recommend waiting for a patch instead of manually installing the May update.

Windows 10 May 2020 issues with Lenovo laptops

Here is a list of issues published by Lenovo after the company tested its large fleet of tablets and laptops with the Windows 10 May 2020 update. When the methods to these issues don't work, consider rolling to a far more stable version of Windows 10.

UltraNav driver problem for ThinkPads

Certain ThinkPad models are getting hit with a "Failed to load Apoint.DLL, Alps Pointing device application has stopped" error when installing the May 2020 update. It has related to the UltraNav driver, which helps the Synaptics pointing device.

Lenovo provided a simple solution to the issue:

1. Press your window + X answer to open Device Manager.
2. Expand the arrow before Mice and other pointing devices and choose Think UltraNav device.
3. Right click on it and select Update driver. The UltraNav driver will be automatically updated towards the latest.
4. Restart your computer.

Yellow warning on disk drive

Popular ThinkPad models, like the ThinkPad X1 Extreme Gen 2, are showing a yellow warning around the disk drive. You will have to disable BitLocker to resolve this issue. Fundamental essentials steps Lenovo recommends you are taking:

1. Right-click around the drive with the yellow warning mark.
2. Turn on BitLocker then power it down. If you do not need BitLocker, go to Settings > Update & Security > Device encryption, and then click Turn Off.

Movies & TV app with green border

If you see a green border round the Movies & TV app, then your AMD video driver inside your laptop is causing problems. AMD will release a patch with this issue on June 15, 2020, so be sure to update the motive force once it becomes available.

F11 hotkey issues

This specific problem affects only the ThinkPad X1 Tablet (Gen 3). Whenever you install the May 2020 update, the F11 hotkey might stop working. Lenovo is looking to roll out a fix by June 29. Until then, visit User interface > System and Security > Lenovo > Keyboard Manager.

Blue screen of death of Death error

We almost got through this without mentioning the dreaded Blue Screen of Death error. Unfortunately, the ThinkPad P70 fell victim to this most-feared issue after installing the May 2020 update. Lenovo suspects the issue is BIOS related as well as an investigation is still ongoing.

Of all of the issues, this is the most troubling. The only surefire way to protect your P70 is as simple as going back to an early on version of Windows 10 (whether it will let you).

If the Microsoft rewards badge is showing constant notifications, adopt these measures to get rid of Microsoft rewards from the Start menu.

Windows 10 shows a little badge (medallion icon) over the Start menu to encourage users to participate in the Microsoft rewards or bing rewards. In the event you don't know, the Microsoft reward program provides you with points for implementing Bing search. Once you earn enough points, you are able to redeem those points in select local or online retailers. For example, you are able to redeem the points to buy Xbox Game Pass membership, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox console, console, etc.

The problem is, Microsoft rewards program is just available in select few regions. Even if the program isn't available in your country or you are no participant, the beginning menu may still show the Microsoft Rewards badge in the Start menu. Occasionally, the rewards badge might even show notifications directly in the Start menu.

If you do not like behavior, stick to the guide below to remove Microsoft rewards badge in the Windows 10 Start menu.

Steps to get rid of Microsoft Rewards Badge in Start Menu

Follow the steps listed below to remove the Microsoft rewards badge within the Start menu.

Open the Settings app.
Go towards the "Search" page.
Visit the "Permission & History" page.
On the right panel, switch off "Microsoft Account" under "Cloud Search Content".
Changes are saved automatically.
Close the Settings app.

From now, you will not see the Microsoft rewards badge or medallion icon in the Start menu. If you wish to, you may also stop Windows from showing search results out of your school or work account. Just turn off the "Work or school account" option under Cloud Search Content.

To revert the changes and show the Microsoft rewards icon in the Start menu, follow the same steps but switch on the switch under Microsoft Account in step 4.

Disable Tips, Tricks, and Suggestions Notifications

Along with Microsoft rewards, Windows 10 will even show occasional notifications for suggested apps, tips, tricks, and also to advertise other Windows and Microsoft services.

Steps to disable Tips, Tricks, and Suggestions Notifications.

Open Settings.
Go to "System".
Visit the "Notifications & Actions" page.
Around the right page, uncheck "Get tips, tricks, and suggestions as you use Windows" checkbox.
Close the Settings app.

That's it. Windows will no longer show the end, trick, and suggestion notifications in the notification center or in the start menu. If you would like those notifications back, then follow the same steps and choose the checkbox in step four.

From time to time, Windows might show the wrong time. This is especially true when you're dual booting or some program is changing the time without informing the admin. In the event that ever occurs, you are able to force sync Windows time with a single command. Let me demonstrate how.

To make use of the Windows time sync command, you need admin privileges. If you don't have admin privileges, make use of the second alternative method.

Windows Time Sync Command

To force sync time in Windows, you use the below command.

w32tm /resync

Steps to Force Sync Time with Command Line

Open the Start menu,
Search for "Command Prompt".
Right-click on the result and choose "Run as administrator".
Type "w32tm /resync" and press Enter.

As soon as you press the Enter button, Windows will execute time sync command. This will force Windows to exhibit the correct time.

Detailed Step-by-step Guide

First, open the beginning menu, look for "Command Prompt", right-click around the result and choose "Run as Administrator" option. Doing this will open the Command Prompt with admin rights.

In the Command Prompt window, execute the w32tm /resync command.

Once you execute the command, Windows will resync time according to your present timezone. The time facts are updated in the default time.windows.com server (Windows Internet Time Server).

Command to Sync Time with Domain Controller

If your Windows system in on the domain then make use of the w32tm /domain command.

When executing the command, sometimes you might see "The computer didn't resync because no time data was available" error. This is not unusual. Particularly in Windows 7 and Windows 8. Just execute the command multiple times also it should work.

Use Custom Time Server to Sync Time

Like I said before, Windows uses time.windows.com as the default time server. In the event that time server isn't working for you or if you desire to use another custom time server, you can do that too.

Open the command prompt as admin and execute the following command.

w32tm /config /update /manualpeerlist:time.server.url.com

Don't forget to replace time.server.url.com using the actual time server URL. You should use the NTP Pool Project to find the time server addresses of various countries and places.

Once you execute the command, Windows will access that point server, has got the some time and syncs it with your system.

Sync Time Using Settings App

As a substitute, you may also sync time using the Settings app. In fact, compared to the command prompt or the user interface, the brand new options in the Settings app are much easier to access and use.

1. First, press "Windows Key + I" to open the Settings app.

2. Go to the "Time & Language Date & Time" page. On the right-panel, click the "Sync" button under the Synchronize your clock section.

As soon as you click the button, laptop computer will sync time using the default Windows time server.

The settings app won't permit you to change the default time server. If you are using a custom time server then you've to follow along with the Command Prompt method shown above.

Like I said before, Windows uses time.windows.com because the default time server. In the event that time server isn't on your side or you desire to use another custom time server, it can be done too.

Open the command prompt as admin and execute the following command. Don't forget to replace time.server.url.com using the actual time server URL. You can use the NTP Pool Project to obtain the time server addresses of different countries and places.

w32tm /config /update /manualpeerlist:time.server.url.com

Once you execute the command, Windows will access that point server, gets the time and syncs it with your system.

That's it. This is actually the Windows time sync command.

Sync Time Using Settings App

As an alternative, you may also sync the time while using Settings app. In fact, compared to the command prompt or even the control panel, the brand new options in the Settings app are much easier to access and use.

First, press "Windows Key + I" to spread out the Settings app.

Go to the "Time & Language → Date & Time" page. On the right-panel, click the "Sync" button underneath the Synchronize your clock section.

As soon as you click on the button, Windows will sync the time. Windows uses the default time server to sync time. If you wish to sync time using a custom time server then use the above command to sync Windows time. As of penning this, the Settings app has no choices to change the default time server.

Microsoft is now giving the finishing touches to Windows 10 version 2004, also known as Windows 10 May 2020 Update, and when the rollout to production devices begins next week, the organization can focus more about what's next because of its operating-system.

The next-next Windows 10 feature update is due within the fall of 2020, but all signs appear to be suggesting that this you will follow within the footsteps of the November 2019 Update and come rather as a cumulative update than the usual major release.

In other words, the focus will be on fixes underneath the hood and fewer on additional features.

Then when you are looking at additional features, before summer 2021 update may be the one which users will be more looking forward to. And according to a recent "accidental" revealing, Microsoft will begin testing this feature update the following month.

Long-term testing

Microsoft said in a article spotted by WL that Windows 10 21H1 (2021), apt to be called Windows 10 version 2104, will get to the Windows Insider program next month.

"The Windows Insider Fast ring happens to be on our Manganese (Mn) OS branch," the company said. "We expect the short ring to change over to our Iron (Fe) branch toward the later part of June."

The mention of Windows 10 21H1 feature update was already removed by Microsoft, so you can click the linked page above to determine the cached version.

At this time, the schedule for Windows 10 preview builds gets a lot clearer. Once Microsoft ships Windows 10 version 2004, the company will begin testing the fall of 2020 update, or version 2009/20H2 with the Slow ring within the Windows Insider program.

Starting the following month, the short ring will be provided with Windows 10 21H1, or version 2104, preview builds, so the two rings is going to be serviced simultaneously until the fall update ships officially.
